Kids Crafts: Bookmarks

While we were growing up, my three sisters and I made a lot of kids crafts. We were always looking for ideas for gifts to make for birthdays, Christmas, Valentine's Day and other gift-giving holidays. It is my goal to try to remember some of the "good ones" and provide you with free printable templates to work with. I will let you know up front: I do not plan on including any pantyhose projects. Now maybe you will not lose any rest!

The Bookmarks

Here is the printable template for simple bookmarks (four to a page, measuring 6.5" x 1.75" or 16.5cm x 3.5cm each).

If possible, use cardstock for printing this template. What you are printing is the back side of the bookmarks. When giving kids crafts for gifts it is especially nice to have the child write his or her own name and the date (or at least the year) the item was made.

Grandparents in particular seem to appreciate this gesture and have been known to hang on to these items for quite some time, especially if the name was not written "perfectly."

This will leave the other side blank for you to use your imagination. If you get stumped; here are some suggestions for decorating the bookmarks:

  • Artwork your child has previously completed that can be cut to smaller pieces.
  • Comic strip blocks. Cut as desired and glue or paste to front of bookmark.
  • Fabric or felt shapes.
  • Original artwork in the form of colored pencil, crayons and/or markers.
  • Photographs are always a favorite when choosing sentimental decorative materials.
This bookmark should easily accommodate those school pictures that are half-wallet sized.
  • Print and decorate some free clip art!

  • Reuse pretty images from greeting cards or wrapping paper. Cut as desired and glue or paste to front of bookmark.
  • Rubber stamps and/or fingerprint art
  • Scrapbooking embellishments (don't forget those hole punches for rounded corners!)
  • Sponge painting (heart shapes for Valentine's Day, snowflakes for winter holidays, etc.)
  • Stickers or fun foam shapes
