Kids Crafts Gift Crafts: Bookmarks

These kids crafts bookmarks are simple enough once you have made them a few times. I remember very clearly making these as a child using newspaper comics and adding these super tassels for giving as gifts. These gift crafts are especially good for giving to Grandma and Grandpa. Don't forget that Grandparents Day is celebrated each year on the first Sunday after Labor Day. This year remember your grandparents on Sunday: September 13, 2009.

How to Make a Bookmark Tassel

Here are the supplies we used to make our tassels:

  • Scissors
  • Yarn and/or string
  • Toilet paper roll

(four to a page, measuring 6.5" x 1.75" or 16.5cm x 3.5cm each).

Before you start:
  • Gather your supplies. It is easier to finish a project if you don't have to go looking for something!
  • Cut a length of yarn about 24" (60cm) long. Fold in half and knot about 3/4 of the way down; approximately 3" (8cm) from the ends. It should look like a long skinny body with two short legs! In the image to the right, this is the dark "loop" from which the tassel hangs.
  • Next, cut another length of yarn about 6" (16cm) long. We will use this piece shortly. In the image to the right, this is the yellow or gold yarn that is wrapped around the "head" of the tassel.

Step 1:

Flatten the toilet paper roll and cut along one of the creases.

Step 2:
Wrap yarn around toilet paper roll 12-16 times. Leave the beginning of the yarn hanging towards open end of roll.
Note: You can use more than one color of yarn if desired,
just make sure to leave the ends facing the same direction!

Step 3:
Trim end of yarn. Allow end piece to hang toward open end of roll.
Cut yarn through the open end of roll to create tassel ends.

Step 4:
Tie cut pieces with long yarn "loop"; leaving knot at the top and tying this second knot beneath. This will hold your tassel together. If the "legs" of your long piece were too long, just cut them to the same length.

Step 5:

Take smaller length of prepared yarn and wrap around the top portion of your tassel (crossing in opposite directions) to create a "head" of sorts. Tie off in a secure knot and smooth your tassel out.

Step 6:

Trim tassel ends to even length.
(We slipped it back through the toilet paper roll for a nice even trim!)
Don't you just love kids crafts?

How to attach your tassel to your bookmark:
  1. Punch hole in bookmark.
  2. Insert loop end through front of hole. Pull all the way through so tassel is "stopped" in the punched hole.
  3. Bring the loop down so the tassel is in the middle of the loop.
  4. Pull the tassel up, and your kids crafts bookmark is complete!
